Key Ingredients for Air Fryer Fish Sticks

Creating delicious Air Fryer Fish Sticks at home requires the right ingredients to ensure they are both tasty and crispy. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need:

Fish Fillets: The star of this dish! I usually go for fresh white fish like cod or tilapia, as they have a mild flavor and firm texture. If fresh isn’t available, frozen fillets work just as well—just make sure to thaw them completely.

Breadcrumbs: For that perfect crunch, I use panko breadcrumbs. They provide a light and airy texture that elevates the final product and keeps those fish sticks from being soggy. If you prefer a different texture, regular breadcrumbs can also do the trick.

Eggs: These act as a binding agent, helping the breadcrumbs adhere to the fish. I recommend using large eggs, which can create a lovely coating when beaten and mixed.

Seasonings: A mix of salt, pepper, and your favorite spices can elevate the flavor profile. I particularly enjoy adding garlic powder and paprika for a bit of depth and warmth.

Olive Oil: A light spray or drizzle of olive oil helps achieve that golden-brown finish, enhancing the crispy exterior of your Air Fryer Fish Sticks.

With these key ingredients on hand, you’re well on your way to enjoying a healthier version of this classic comfort food.

Tips for Making Perfect Air Fryer Fish Sticks

Crafting crispy and delicious Air Fryer Fish Sticks at home can be a delightful experience when you know a few key tips. Here’s how to elevate your fish stick game!

Choosing the Right Fish

The foundation of great air fryer fish sticks starts with selecting the right fish. I recommend using thicker fillets of white fish like cod, haddock, or tilapia. These varieties hold their shape well during cooking and have a mild flavor that pairs beautifully with various spices and dips. Fresh fish is preferable for the best taste, but frozen can work just fine if you’re in a pinch.

Temperature and Timing

Achieving that perfect crispiness requires the right temperature and timing. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for optimal cooking results. Generally, your fish sticks will need about 10-12 minutes to cook. Flip them halfway through to ensure even browning. Keep an eye on them, as cooking times may slightly vary based on the thickness of your fish.

The Importance of Drying the Fish

Before breading, it’s essential to pat your fish dry with paper towels. Excess moisture can lead to soggy sticks and prevent the breading from adhering properly. A perfectly dried surface will allow the seasonings and breading to stick better, resulting in a tantalizing golden crust once they’re done cooking.

With these tips, you’ll master the art of making delightful Air Fryer Fish Sticks that are sure to impress!

How do I know when the fish is done?

Timing is crucial for achieving the perfect texture. Generally, your Air Fryer Fish Sticks should take around 8–10 minutes at 400°F. Here’s a quick test: they’re done when they’re golden brown and flake easily with a fork. If you have a kitchen thermometer, the internal temperature should reach 145°F. A little tip? Check them a couple of minutes before the timer goes off to avoid overcooking.

Can I use different types of flour?

Absolutely! While I often opt for all-purpose flour for my Air Fryer Fish Sticks, you can experiment with other types like whole wheat flour for added fiber or even almond flour for a gluten-free option. Each flour will give you a slightly different texture, so feel free to play around!

How do I store leftovers?

If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, simply let them cool completely before storing. Place your fish sticks in an airtight container and refrigerate them; they’ll stay fresh for up to three days. Description

Delicious and crispy fish sticks made with cod, halibut, or other thick white fish fillets. Perfectly seasoned and quick to prepare in an air fryer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces cod, halibut, or other thick white fish fillets (see notes)
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 2 tsp. Fish Rub (see notes)
  • 1/4 tsp. freshly-ground black pepper
  • Tartar Sauce for serving (We loved this with my Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce, see notes.)

Instructions

  1. Thaw the cod, halibut, or other thick white fish pieces overnight in the fridge if frozen. Then drain fish well and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Cut fish crosswise into short strips about 1 inch wide. We got 16 strips from four fish fillets, but if your Air Fryer is a smaller model you might not be able to cook that much at once.
  3. Prepare two bowls, one with beaten eggs and the other with a mixture of the almond flour, Fish Rub, and a little freshly-ground black pepper.
  4. Set Air Fryer to 390F/200C. Preheat the air fryer if needed. We sprayed the Air Fryer basket with non-stick spray.
  5. When you’re ready to cook, dip each piece of fish first into the egg and then into the almond flour mixture, sprinkling almond flour over with your fingers so the fish is lightly coated. Lay the fish sticks in the Air Fryer basket as you coat them.
  6. Cook the fish for 10-12 minutes, starting to check after about 7-8 minutes to see if you need to rotate the fish. At 10 minutes check to see if you need a bit more time.
  7. Fish is done when it feels firm to the touch and is lightly browned on the outside.
  8. Serve the Air Fryer Fish Sticks hot, with Tartar Sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
  9. If this makes more than you’ll eat at one time, just refrigerate the extra fish and reheat in the Air Fryer.
  10. Bake them at 475F/245C for about 15-20 minutes if you want to cook the fish sticks in the oven.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure the fish is thawed completely before preparation.
  • The Fish Rub can be customized according to your taste preferences.
  • Pairs well with various dipping sauces, but Tartar Sauce is highly recommended.
